LDM (Water-Drop Lifting) LDM 물방울 리프팅

A painless German ultrasound facial for hydration and calm, sensitive skin. Called "lifting" in Korea, but it doesn't lift.

Seoul this week₩66,000$48 · 37 clinicsReviewed 2026-09-23 · sources
Our takeA pleasant, zero-downtime add-on that may calm redness and help skin feel more hydrated, especially after a laser. Ignore the word "lifting": it won't change your contours, and the evidence is thin and mostly small or manufacturer-linked.
Best for
  • Sensitive or easily flushed skin
  • Calming skin after a laser or other treatment
  • Dehydrated, tight-feeling skin
  • Anyone who wants something with no downtime at all
Skip if
  • You want a real lift of the jaw or cheeks: see Shurink or Ultherapy
  • You're only doing one session and expecting a visible change
  • You're in early pregnancy, have a pacemaker, or have open wounds or an active skin infection
  • You had Botox or filler in the last week
Downtime10/10
Nothing visible: clinics say makeup and normal plans straight away, and studies report no downtime.
Comfort10/10
Painless low-heat ultrasound; the acne study describes it as pain-free and well tolerated.
Evidence3/10
Only small studies, mostly uncontrolled or retrospective, with Wellcomet's CEO co-authoring the acne, anti-ageing and swelling studies; the best redness study used another maker's device.
Trip-friendly5/10
No recovery and fine to fly the same day, but the effect clinics describe needs 5–10 or more sessions at 1–2 a week.
Seoul value9/10
At about ₩66,000 a session, Seoul costs roughly 13% of a US$380 Chicago session and 15–30% of Singapore's S$209–418.
Glow & hydration4/10
In the best facial study (a similar device), 4 weekly sessions cut water loss and lowered redness by only about 9%; one session is a mild, short boost.

Higher is better for a traveller. Tap a score to see why.

Pros and cons in full
What we like
  • Zero downtime: makeup straight after, fly the same day
  • Painless, with little heat, so it suits sensitive and easily flushed skin
  • A natural add-on after a laser, lifting or booster treatment
  • Sold in short blocks (6–24 minutes), so it's cheap to try
  • Much cheaper in Seoul than Singapore or the US
Watch out for
  • The Korean name promises lifting, but it doesn't lift facial contours
  • One session does little; the effect clinics describe needs 5–10 or more sessions
  • The evidence is thin: small, mostly uncontrolled studies, several co-authored by the maker
  • Prices vary a lot with session length, so like-for-like comparison is hard
  • No study has looked at results on different skin tones

One trip or a course?

One session is a nice extra, not a result. The effects clinics describe come from a course of 5–10 or more sessions at 1–2 a week, so a two-week stay could fit a few sessions; a long weekend fits one.

Combining treatments

Most useful as an add-on: Korean clinics often add LDM after a laser, lifting or skin-booster treatment to soothe the skin. After Botox or filler, clinics suggest doing LDM first or waiting at least a week.

For the next 1–2 days, skip:Saunas, jjimjilbang and hot yoga for 48 hoursExfoliating acids for 3 daysSkipping sunscreen: wear SPF 50+ daily
Best season for LDM in Seoul

LDM leaves no wound to protect, so any month works. It's most useful in autumn and winter, as a calming add-on in Seoul's laser season and when the air is driest. The evidence is small and partly co-authored by the maker.

  • SpringFine. Fine dust peaks March to May and weakens the skin barrier; a similar ultrasound device lowered water loss and redness in one small study, but in rosacea and acne patients, not dust exposure.
  • SummerNo downtime, so heat and strong UV (up to 9–10) change little. Keep up your usual sunscreen.
  • AutumnKorean dermatologists favour the low-UV months for lasers, and LDM is often booked alongside to calm skin. A small study found it shortened swelling after surgery.
  • WinterThe driest months, and indoor heating raises skin water loss. A hydration-focused session fits, but expect short-term comfort, not a lasting fix.
What age is LDM best for?
  • 20sThe best-matched evidence: a small acne study averaged age 30 and a redness study's acne group averaged 29. Both are small, and the acne study is co-authored by the maker.
  • 30sReasonable for sensitive, flushed skin or as a laser add-on. In a study of ages 23–55 using a similar device from another maker, 4 weekly sessions improved hydration and redness.
  • 40sThe rosacea group in that study averaged 43, so redness-prone skin may benefit. It won't treat sagging.
  • 50+The only anti-ageing study (ages 30–63) was unblinded, co-authored by the maker and used 8–12 sessions for modest wrinkle change. Don't buy it for lifting.

LDM at the clinic: red flags and what to say

Walk out if…

  • LDM sold as a lifting or contour treatment. It isn't one
  • A price with no session length. Ask how many minutes you're getting
  • Pressure to buy a 10-session package when you're only in Seoul for a few days
  • No questions about pregnancy, a pacemaker, or recent Botox or filler
  • A "full" price for what turns out to be a 6-minute add-on

FAQ

LDM: questions people actually ask

Does water-drop lifting actually lift?

No. The name refers to the claimed hydration effect. Korean clinic guides say it does not lift facial contours; for that, look at HIFU like Shurink or Ultherapy.

How much does LDM cost in Seoul?

This week's median across 37 Seoul clinic listings is about ₩66,000 a session, with a range of ₩25,000–₩990,000. Many are short add-on sessions. Price depends heavily on session length (commonly 6–24 minutes), so always ask how many minutes you're getting. In Singapore, clinics charge S$209–418 a session.

How many sessions do I need?

Korean clinics say effects build over 5–10 or more sessions at 1–2 a week, with maintenance every 2–8 weeks after that. One session on a trip is a pleasant extra, not a result.

Is there any downtime?

No. You can wear makeup straight away. Sensitive skin may go faintly pink for a short time. Skip saunas and hot yoga for 48 hours and exfoliating acids for 3 days.

Can I have it right after a laser?

Yes, that's one of its most common uses in Korea: clinics add it after a laser, lifting or booster treatment to soothe the skin. After Botox or filler, clinics suggest having LDM first or waiting at least a week.

Is it good for rosacea or redness?

It's one of the better reasons to try it, but the evidence is small: one uncontrolled study of 26 people found less redness after 4 weekly sessions with a similar device. It isn't a substitute for seeing a dermatologist about rosacea.

Is it safe for darker skin?

It's a low-heat, non-invasive treatment and the studies report no significant side effects, but none looked at results by skin tone. Tell the clinic your skin type anyway.

How does LDM work? The science

LDM (Local Dynamic Micromassage) is Wellcomet's name for ultrasound that switches rapidly between two or three frequencies. Higher frequencies stay shallow: the maker says 10 MHz acts almost only in the epidermis and dermis (about 3 mm), while 3 MHz reaches about 1 cm. Wellcomet claims this changes how the skin handles collagen-breaking enzymes, heat-shock proteins and hyaluronan, and that it frees bound water in tissue.

The Korean name, 물방울 리프팅 or "water-drop lifting", comes from that hydration claim. Korean clinic guides say plainly that it does not lift facial contours the way Ultherapy or Thermage aim to.

The strongest facial data is for inflammation. A 2021 Seoul study of 26 people with rosacea or acne, using a similar dual-frequency ultrasound device from another German maker, found less redness and better barrier function after 4 weekly sessions. It had no control group and was sponsored by the device maker.

A 2025 study of 22 acne patients treated with triple-frequency LDM reported about 74% improvement by the end of treatment and 90% at follow-up. It was retrospective, had no control group, and one author is Wellcomet's CEO.

On recovery: a 2024 study found that patients given daily LDM for 5 days after nose surgery had swelling for about 1.9 days, versus 4.5 days with ice packs (24 patients per group, retrospective; one author works for Wellcomet). A small 2015 split-body study after fat-dissolving injections found less pain but no difference in swelling or bruising. There's no trial on recovery after cosmetic lasers specifically.

In short: a plausible, low-risk treatment with small, early studies for redness and swelling. There's no good evidence that it lifts or reverses ageing.
