Aqua Peel 아쿠아필

Korea's everyday version of the HydraFacial: suction, acid solutions and serum for clean pores and a quick glow, for the price of lunch.

Seoul this week₩33,000$24 · 12 clinicsReviewed 2026-09-23 · sources
Our takeA cheap, zero-downtime deep clean. Good for blackheads and a day-or-two glow, and a low-risk way to try a Seoul clinic. Just don't expect it to change your skin long term, and watch for the upsell.
Best for
  • Blackheads, oily skin and congested pores
  • Arrival day, or the day before a big event or photos
  • First-timers who want to try a Korean clinic cheaply
  • Adding onto another treatment in the same visit
Skip if
  • You want lifting, firmer skin or fewer wrinkles
  • You have a cold sore, skin infection or a moderate-to-severe acne flare
  • You have rosacea in a flare, or took isotretinoin (Accutane) in the last 6 months
  • You've just had a laser, peel or facial surgery
Downtime9/10
Mild pinkness for about 15–30 minutes, usually gone within hours; no flaking or marks.
Comfort9/10
No numbing needed; in the acne trial, stinging and tingling were rated mostly mild.
Evidence4/10
One small randomized study (20 women, 2008) plus a few uncontrolled ones; the acne and photodamage studies had HydraFacial or Allergan staff as authors.
Trip-friendly10/10
One 30–45 minute visit, nothing to recover from, fly the same day, and there's no course to finish.
Seoul value9/10
At about ₩33,000 a session, Seoul costs roughly 8–16% of a US HydraFacial at US$150–300.
Pores & blackheads5/10
One session visibly clears pores, but oil returns within hours and blackheads within 2–4 weeks; the bigger acne gains (clear skin 20% to 65%) took 6 sessions.

Higher is better for a traveller. Tap a score to see why.

Pros and cons in full
What we like
  • No needles, no numbing and no downtime: you can go straight back out
  • Visible result the same day: cleaner pores and a dewy look
  • Often one of the cheapest treatments on a Seoul clinic menu
  • A low-risk way to try a Korean clinic before booking something bigger
  • Easy to add onto another treatment in the same visit
Watch out for
  • The glow lasts about a week; blackheads come back in a few weeks
  • Not a lift, not a laser: no real effect on wrinkles, sagging or scars
  • Very little independent research, mostly small studies on branded devices
  • Cheap first-visit prices can be a way in for a bigger sales pitch
  • Can sting or redden sensitive skin, and isn't for active acne flares or rosacea flares

Combining treatments

Clinics often bundle it with LDM, a cooling mask or LED, and it often comes as part of a first-visit package. Ask what's included and what costs extra.

For the next 1–2 days, skip:Direct sun for about 48 hours; wear SPF 30+ dailyRetinoids for 3–5 days, and acids or scrubs for a couple of daysSaunas and jjimjilbang for 1–2 daysA second exfoliating treatment the same week
Best season for aqua peel in Seoul

Aqua peel leaves no wound, but its acid step can make skin more sun-sensitive for several days, so October to March, with UV at 2–5, is easiest. Summer is when oily skin wants it most.

  • SpringUV reaches 7–8 by April and May and fine dust peaks, straining the skin barrier. Fine if you wear SPF 50 for the following week.
  • SummerFacial oil peaks in summer, so the deep clean feels best, but UV hits 9–10. The FDA advises sun protection for a week after acid exfoliants.
  • AutumnEasy aftercare from October as UV drops to 3–4. A good time to clear pores after summer.
  • WinterLowest UV of the year. Cold, dry air makes skin scalier, so exfoliation helps, but follow with a rich moisturiser.
What age is aqua peel best for?
  • 20sThe best fit: oil production stays high through early adulthood, and in the one acne trial (median age 30) clear or almost-clear skin rose from 20% to 65%. It's a single small study.
  • 30sA quick refresh. In a small trial of women aged 34–56, six sessions thickened skin and softened fine lines, but one visit is a clean, not a treatment.
  • 40sPhotodamage studies in this range saw some smoothing right after one visit, but lasting gains only over 6 sessions with added serums. Nice glow, but it won't touch sagging.
  • 50+Oil production falls after menopause, so drier skin gains less from the pore clean. If you go, ask for a gentler version.

Aqua peel at the clinic: red flags and what to say

Walk out if…

  • A cheap first-visit aqua peel that turns into a long consultation pushing an expensive package
  • The price doesn't say which steps are included (many menus split it into 2-step and 3-step versions)
  • Pressure to add extras like masks, ampoules or LDM without a clear price for each
  • Being offered sedation or sleep for a simple facial. It isn't needed
  • No one asks about isotretinoin, active acne, rosacea or a recent laser before starting

FAQ

Aqua peel: questions people actually ask

Is aqua peel the same as a HydraFacial?

It's the same basic idea, called hydradermabrasion: an acid solution, suction and a hydrating serum. HydraFacial is one company's branded device and protocol. Korean clinics usually use other machines and their own solutions and call it 아쿠아필.

Why is it so cheap in Seoul?

Our median across 12 Seoul clinic listings is ₩33,000, with a range of ₩10,900–₩110,000. Clinics often use it as a first-visit deal or a small add-on to bigger packages, so the price gets you in the door. That's fine, as long as you only pay for what you came for.

How long does the glow last?

Expect the dewy look for about 5–7 days. Cleaner pores last a little longer, roughly 2–4 weeks, before sebum and blackheads build up again.

Can I get it with acne or sensitive skin?

Mild breakouts and oily, congested skin are what it's best at. Skip it during a moderate or severe acne flare, a rosacea flare, a cold sore or any skin infection, and within about 6 months of taking isotretinoin. If your skin is sensitive, tell the clinic and ask for gentle extraction.

How often should I get it?

Korean clinics suggest every 2–4 weeks for maintenance. Doing it more often can over-exfoliate and leave skin more sensitive to the sun.

Will it help wrinkles or sagging?

Not in any lasting way. It can make fine lines look softer for a few days because skin is hydrated, but it's not a lift and not a laser. For firmness, look at Ultherapy, Shurink or a skin booster.

How does aqua peel work? The science

Hydradermabrasion combines suction with water-based solutions. Instead of scratching off dead skin with crystals, a rotating tip loosens the top layer with mild acids (AHA/BHA), vacuums out sebum and debris from pores, and then pushes a hydrating serum onto the freshly exfoliated skin.

The best-known study is small: in 2008, 20 women aged 34–56 had six treatments 7–10 days apart. Biopsies showed a thicker epidermis and fewer fine lines, smaller-looking pores and less pigmentation. The comparison group, who just had the same serum applied by hand, showed no change.

A 2024 imaging study of 8 volunteers found the outer skin layer thinner and smoother right after treatment, but by 2 weeks it was back to its normal thickness and there was no visible change in collagen. That fits what you see in the mirror: a short-term polish, not a structural change.

For acne, a 2022 study gave 20 adults with mild-to-moderate acne six HydraFacial acne treatments with blue LED light over 12 weeks. The share who were clear or almost clear rose from 20% to 65% by investigator rating. There was no control group, blinding wasn't possible, and one author worked for the manufacturer. Temporary redness was very common: 90% had some at some point, half of them moderate.

A 2024 study of 29 women with skin types II–VI, 41% of them African American, found a similar diamond-tip hydradermabrasion device well tolerated in a group spanning light to dark skin, with immediate gains in smoothness, radiance and hydration after one session. It was run by the device maker, Allergan, and also used a growth-factor serum at home, so the device alone can't take all the credit.

Research on classic microdermabrasion shows why the effect is short: oil on the skin drops right after treatment but is back to baseline within an hour. In short: a pleasant, safe cleanse with a real but short-lived result.
